Students of the Month

Our secondary students of the month for April are Carson Lester (junior high) and Shelby Beckham (high school). The theme for the month was "a servant's heart."

Shot put/Discus Throwers State Bound

Congratulations to Sam Mathis who finished 2nd in the boys' discus throw and to Ashlynd Wilkerson who finished 2nd in both the girls' shot put and girls' discus throw at the A/AA Middle Sectional Track and Field Championships. Their placement automatically advances these students to the TSSAA State Track and Field Championships at MTSU on May 23 and 24. Ashlynd will compete on Thursday at 10:15 in discus and at 12:15 in shot put. Sam will compete in discus on Friday at 12:15.

Tennis Region Champs State Bound

Congratulations to seniors Mark Claiborne and Kip Kahler who won the Region Doubles Championship in individual competition on Monday, May 13. They move on to compete in the Spring Fling State Championship competition on Thursday, May 23rd at 9:00 a.m. We are so very proud of you, guys! (Photo by Helen Comer, Daily News Journal)

District Champions and District Awards

Congratulations to our high school baseball team who defeated the Forrest Rockets 3-1 on Thursday, May 9th to claim the District Tournament Championship. This is the first time in MTCS history that our baseball team has claimed that title. Way to go, guys! And special congratulations to Philip Bonabi for being named Tournament MVP and regular season MVP and to Peyton Buckner for being named District Pitcher of the Year. Other players named to the All-District team were Kyle Howard, Austin Melton, Lawson Pitts, Lucas Smith and Justin Winn.

District Soccer Awards

Three of our high school soccer players were honored recently with District awards. Martin Moore and Levi Bogus were All-District for the regular season, and Carson Calahan was named All-Tournament. Congratulations!

Trap Signee

Senior Ashley Swift recently signed to shoot trap for Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. Ashley is an accomplished trap shooter, having just competed in the Junior Olympics in early May. Congratulations, Ashley!

Duke TIP Recognition

Congratulations to Whitney Riggs for qualifying for Grand Recognition through the Duke TIP program. Whitney scored better than 90% of recent graduates on the ACT, which she took as a 7th grader.  Only 3% of Duke TIP participants qualify for this recognition.  Whitney will be attending a special recognition ceremony at Duke University later this month.  Additionally, Anica Gilbert and Kyle Rogers earned State Recognition by scoring at or above the national average on at least one part of the ACT, also taken as 7th graders. CONGRATULATIONS to these three students!

Forensic Competition

Clay Mitchell and Kristen Perry recently competed at the Forensic Science Symposium at MTSU.  During the school year, they completed some original research in the field of forensics and presented their work in a judged competition at the university.  Clay won 3rd place with his project titled:  The Decomposition of Organic Matter in Different Soil Types. Congratulations!

Bowler of the Year

Congratulations to senior Allen Wilson who was named Rutherford County Bowler of the Year at the Daily News Journal's All-Sports Banquet on Thursday, May 2nd.

Track Records Broken

Congratulations to Bryson Hammrich for his 5th place finish in shotput in the Rutherford County Track Championships.  Bryson’s score of 44’ 04” set a new school record, beating the previous record by 6”.  Freshman Ashlynd Wilkerson also broke school records for shotput (29' 11") and discus (84' 4"). 

MTEMC Essay Winners

Juniors Katie Farmer and Clay Mitchell each won $100 for essays they submitted to Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation.  Katie was also chosen, along with 12 other students for four counties in Tennessee, to attend a free week-long trip to Washington, D.C.  Congratulations!

Congressional Art Winners

Congratulations to senior Mallory Bowman, whose artwork took 2nd place in the district Congressional Art Contest, and to senior Megan Smith, who placed in the top 10.

Band Solo & Ensemble Awards

Congratulations are in order for the following MTCS Band students who received Superior ratings at Solo & Ensemble recently:  Jessica Farmer, Addison Boyle, Lauren Jennings, Jacye Wilkerson, Megan Ellis, Abigail Ferrell, Mason Sowder, Nathan Juengling, Raine Estes, Samantha Bowman, Bryce Richardson, Heather West, Shelby Richardson, and Katie Farmer.  We are also proud of Hallie Cary and Estrela Shear who received an Excellent rating for their duet.  Great job!!

Duke TIP Students

Congratulations to the following for receiving recognition from the Duke TIP program: Whitney Riggs (Grand Recognition), Anica Gilbert (State Recognition), and Kyle Rogers (State Recognition). These students scored high enough on the ACT test as 7th graders to be honored with this recognition.

Congratulations to the following who took the ACT as 7th graders based on high Stanford scores in 6th grade:  Parker Bates, Paul Batey, Anica Gilbert, Andrew McConnell, Seth Nixon, Justin Perrigo, Jacob Richardson, Whitney Riggs, Kyle Rogers, Hayden Simmons and Sierra VanMullen.  It is an honor to qualify.  We are proud of everyone.
