Golfers advance to Region Tournament

Congratulations to senior Kayla Hickey for scoring the 4th Medalist in the District Golf Tournament on Friday, September 2nd.  She will advance to represent MTCS in the Region Tournament at Henry Horton on Monday, September 19th, along with freshman Barron Corley, who is representing the MTCS boys team. 

Students of the Month announced

Our August Students of the Month are Ashley Watson (high school) and Caleb Hobgood (junior high).  They were selected by their teachers and recognized as outstanding examples for the month’s theme of Responsibility. 

Alpha-Omega Students Recognized

Each year MTCS recognizes the members of our senior class known as Alpha Omega Club.  These students have attended MTCS for all 13 years (K-12th Grade):  Steven Barker, Nick Dennis, Samantha Fetz, Bethany Hall, Kayla Hickey, Andrew McMahan, Ben Mullen, Courtney Rhodes, Parker Richardson, Cathy Throneberry, Cally Waldron, Ashley Watson, and Hannah Wright.  They have been and will always be an important part of our school’s history. 

Superlatives for 2011-2012 announced

Students recognized in Christian Chronicle

Seniors Hannah Wright and Rachel Young, who spearheaded an effort to raise money for a children’s home in Brazil, were the subjects of an article (click here for pdf) in the October 2011 edition of the Christian Chronicle recognizing them for their accomplishments.  The girls raised over $60,000. 

MTCS/American Red Cross sponsor blood drive

MTCS and the American Red Cross are sponsoring a blood drive on Friday, September 23rd in the new gym.  Our national blood inventory is at a critical level.  We are asking parents to please consider donating a few minutes of time to help save someone’s life.  Several slots are available – simply call the high school office to schedule an appointment.  Everyone donating will be entered into a drawing for a $100 VISA card.

Extended Care available for Fall Break

Extended Care will be available for elementary students needing care during our Fall Break October 3-7.  Reservation forms for PK and school-age students are due by Friday, September 23rd.  Forms received after September 23rd must receive approval from the Extended Care Coordinator, Nikki Hutchins, in order to make a reservation. 

Fall Festival Theme Baskets

Each 1st period class in 7th-12th grade is responsible for creating a theme basket to be auctioned at the Fall Festival.  Themes for each of the teachers are as follows:  Bookworm (Wilkerson), Gourmet Coffee (Mathis), Game Night (L. Chambless), Christmas (Patton), Couch Potato (Wright), Fall Fever (Starling/Harper), UT (Maxwell), MTSU (Neely), Vandy (Roberts), Stress Relief (Elliott), Disney (Piercey), Greeting Card (Watson), Golfing Galore (Faulkner), Titans (Hurt), Scrapbooking (Smith), Movie Mania (Goodwyn).  Please be gathering items for your child’s assigned basket and submit to the teacher as soon as possible.  Most teachers will accept cash donations and use it to purchase items for the baskets.  As always, thanks for your constant support.  We are looking forward to a great Fall Festival!!

Softball team to sponsor dodgeball tournament

The MTCS Softball team is sponsoring a dodgeball tournament on September 24th at noon in the new gym. Participation is open to everyone. Teams should consist of 6-10 players. Cost is $8 per person and is due by Wednesday, September 21st. To reserve your spot, contact any softball player or Coach Elliott.

TIDBITS:

Letter jackets available for Juniors/Seniors
A representative for letter jackets will be on campus on Friday, September 23rd, for all Juniors/Seniors that are interested.  This is the only opportunity to order these this year.  Forms are available in the high school office.  Payment is due when ordered.  Contact Coach Dan Wilkerson for more details. 

Power of Pink event announced
J. Mullins Jewelry and Gifts is sponsoring a Power of Pink Event celebrating breast cancer survivors and featuring Maryann Makekau, author of The Little Pink Book Series, on Thursday, September 22 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  They will donate 25% off all sales that evening to Murfreesboro’s Power of Pink Organization. 

Student accident insurance procedures
If any injury occurs at school (or at a school-related activity) that results in a visit to the doctor, etc., a written claim needs to be filed within ninety days. Please contact the Business Office if such an accidental injury should take place. This coverage is supplemental to any medical or hospitalization coverage the parents may have on the child. Senior Parents:  Please encourage your students to begin applying for colleges now.  Most colleges request applications by November 1st.

Boys and Girls Club of Murfreesboro is looking for volunteers as tutors and for the MTSU parade float.  See Mallory Trammell for information.

Duke/Georgetown/Harvard/Penn/Stanford will be having an exploring college options sessions on Tuesday, September 20th @7:30 pm @ Nashville Airport Marriott.  This is for both parents/students.
Senior Girls:  The TN Economic Council on Women’s Foundation announce scholarships awards of $1000! Go to www.womenseconomicfoundation.org for details.  Deadline 9/30/11.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is pleased to announce a student essay contest.  1st place is $5,000 Scholarship, 2nd place @2,500 and 3rd $1000.  To enter, please read the rules, regulations and instructions posted here:  www.thefire.org/contests.  See Mrs. Mankin if you are interested.  Deadline is Nov. 5, 2011.
