ELEMENTARY HAPPENINGS
October 9, 2009
Think, think, think…
That’s what our teachers are trying to get their students to
do… think! Kelley
Mullins is always using the technology at hand to instruct or review
skills and concepts with her 5th graders.
She recently used it to help them develop better thinking and study
skills as well. They
practiced coming up with different ways to ask the study questions as they
reviewed Civil War history, giving examples of true/false, multiple
choice, fill in the blank, etc.
Jane Herring had her PK-4 students taking turns acting as a
police officer as the others described what the “lost person”
looked like. The “officer”
then used the details to figure out who the lost person was (such as
“black hair, tall, blue pants, etc.)
This activity went along with the careers unit they are
doing. They learned that a
police officer can help you find a lost person or help you if you are
lost.
Chris Chichuk dressed each of her PK-4 students in different
costumes, as a waitress, a police officer, a construction worker, a
doctor, and others. The other
students had to guess what they were and what they did on their jobs.
She also talked about how much fun it was to be a teacher and
that there are a lot of “fun” jobs to do, such as those in a circus.
Then, “Jo Jo, the Clown” came in as Mrs. Chris
introduced her as her own mom and told about the job she does for fun!
Kathy Oxley worked with her 3rd grade students on finding the
important details in a story to come up with the main idea.
They used graphic organizers to record their ideas.
The students did this with short stories and discussed the
important detail and main idea of a novel that she had read aloud to them
as well.
Mary Webb’s 4th graders also worked on finding the main idea
and supporting details in a story, as well as “generalizing”,
suffixes, and using context clues to find the meaning of words.
Their reading story was on the rainforest, so they made a flap
book showing the four levels from the floor to the canopy.
She also used the internet to show some fascinating creatures found
there and emphasized the wonders of God’s creation!
Linda Cooper’s 5th graders also made a flap book recently
to show the various ways living creatures live together, some in helpful
ways, others (such as parasites) in harmful ways.
The Fall for Music concert was very good!
Hats off to Valerie, Katie, and Shawn for a terrific evening. It is
fun to see the progress from 5th grade to junior high!
