ELEMENTARY HAPPENINGS
September 18, 2009
LaNita Bowman usually spends the first half of computer class working
on a computer skill such as keyboarding, then spends the last half of
class integrating another subject for practice on the computer.
Recently, she integrated math practice in her computer classes by
directing the students to the website connected to our math textbooks or
has them practice Math Facts in a Flash while in computer class.
Their math teachers help LaNita know what lessons the students need for
practice. Each student works independently and at his/her own rate.
This is great use of computer time!
Mike Pruitt’s 4th graders recently made food chain posters for
display. Each student was given a different set of pictures,
including the sun, plants, and consumers consisting of herbivores and
carnivores. The students had to display these, making a food chain.
Then, the students had to analyze the chain and make predictions of what
would happen to the rest of the chain if one particular link in it were to
greatly increase or decrease. They did a great job!
Lisa Richardson’s 3rd graders created their own individual bar
graphs to record and display data. They had to decide how to set
it up, how high their numbers had to go and at what increments, and what
mini-titles would be listed on their graphs. They then analyzed
their data as they compared and contrasted the graphs to answer questions
about the information presented. Great practice!!
